'Let it be called Higgs Boson'
CHANDIGARH: The deliberation on "re-naming of Higgs Boson", commonly know as the god particle to give credit to other scientists who simultaneously published research papers in 1964, has created quite a flutter among the intellectuals in the city too.
"Let the name remain what it is" is what the team of physicists opine on the issue of name change. Four professors and 12 PhD students from the department of physics at PU are a part of the Compact Muon Solonide experiment (CMS) of Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Switzerland.

"For 40 years, the particle is being identified as the Higgs particle and the mechanism is now called Higgs mechanism. The name must be kept the same," says Vipin Bhatnagar, a faculty member at PU's physics department. Other professors involved in the project since 2003 are J B Singh, Suman Berry and Manjit Kaur, apart from Bhatnagar.
The team of PU professors, who have been actively and closely associated with the coveted experiment on the god particle, state their entire career revolved around this name - "Higgs Boson".
"I attended the lecture by Frank Close, a noted physicist, on the history of Higgs Boson this Monday at CERN and it was a great experience to be present there along with other scientists. In my opinion, the name will not be changed,"
added J B Singh. The PU professors suggested the researchers who had contributions on the existence of the Higgs Boson 1964 around the same time as Dr Peter Higgs, must be given due credit and regard.
"The scientists must be duly given the credit. But after becoming such a popular and widely accepted term, it must not be changed," added Manjit.
